DO YOU BELONG HERE?

Wednesday’s Word | IMPOSTER SYNDROME

[ im-pos-ter sin-drohm ]

What is it?

n. anxiety or self-doubt that results from persistently undervaluing one’s competence and active role in achieving success, while falsely attributing one’s accomplishments to luck or other external forces.

What does it matter?

It’s been estimated that upward of 70% of people of all backgrounds struggle with imposter syndrome at some point in their life. This is significant considering the fact that confidence is key in so many of our daily interactions within and outside of the professional realm. Confidence is key in building trust as it indicates to others a belief in whatever it is that you are trying to convey. So imposter syndrome creates a perpetual cycle that causes you to miss opportunities, not because you are incapable, but because your self-doubt signifies to others that they should doubt you too!

How can I overcome it?

GUARD YOUR THOUGHTS | Be intentional about consuming more positive media.

DO NOT COMPARE YOURSELF | Comparison is the thief of joy. You can look to others for inspiration and guidance without the comparison.

REMEMBER YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS | Acknowledge the fact that YOU earned them.

FIND A MENTOR | Connect with someone that is already where you are trying to go and will pour into you while providing honest feedback.

TAKE ON A PROTEGE | Sharing your knowledge is not only a rewarding assignment, but this will further validate just how valuable your expertise and experience really is.

LET US REAFFIRM THAT YOU ARE RIGHT WHERE YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO BE. YOU EARNED IT.

NOW, WHEN YOU ARE READY TO PURSUE THE NEXT LEVEL, WE’LL BE HERE.
